Puff & Stuff: 74 new Google reviews in its first month, and a website the owner controls
The situation
A smoke and vape shop on South Florida Avenue, with several competitors within half a mile, and customers nearby it wasn't reaching.
- Hard to find on Google. Outside the top 20 for "disposables near me" at every point on the local map; mid-pack for "vape shop near me".
- A web address that no longer reached the shop. The address customers knew showed an ad page instead.
- A Google listing that worked against it, in a category Google polices harder than almost any other.
- A competitor ahead. Half a mile away, with more reviews and more directory listings, holding the top spot.
What we did
- Found what was wrong, for free. We traced what had happened to the web address through public records, wrote it up in plain English, and said what was urgent and what could wait.
- Rebuilt the Google profile. Categories (2 became 4), a description from local search research, hours and details, and an appeal folder ready, so a flag takes days to fix, not weeks.
- Fixed the shop's details everywhere else. One set of name, address and hours across the directory sites, so the sources Google cross-checks agree.
- A review system at the register. A counter QR code, a short script for staff, and a reply guide for every kind of review. No rewards for reviews, no screening out unhappy customers.
- A website the shop controls. Fast and built for phones, with a private admin where the owner edits products and photos from his phone, and a 21-and-up age gate. It scored 84 to 90 out of 100 for speed on a phone in Google Lighthouse, Google's page test, and 99 on a desktop, on October 16, 2026. See how we keep sites safe and fast.
The results
The review, click, direction and map figures come from the shop's Google profile. The listings count and the scan score each come from a separate tool. September 2026 was its first month with us; the website went live on September 16.
- 30%up in the shop's business since we started working together, as the owner wrote in a Google review on October 21, 2026. That is the owner's figure for one shop in its first two months with us. We did not measure it, and it is no promise of what your business would see
- 74new Google reviews in September, 73 of them five stars: from 116 reviews at 4.8 stars to 190 at 4.9
- 14five-star reviews in the first 48 hours after the review system went live, against 2 in the previous three months
- 7th → 3rdby review count among the seven Lakeland shops we watch, from the fewest to the third most in one month. The competitor 20 reviews ahead on September 2 was 54 behind on September 30
- 6 → 116clicks from the Google listing to the website, August to September
- 128 → 186direction requests from the listing, August to September: someone asked their phone how to drive to the shop
- 2 → 9of 25 points on the local map where the shop is in Google's top three for "vape shops near me", September 2 to 30
- 14 → 65directory listings, all 65 live since September 28, 2026
- 98out of 100 on a scan that reads the site the way a search engine does (Semrush), on October 1; the best 10% of websites average 92
“He built the best website I ever had in my life, definitely recommend, and the SEO work is out of this world.”
Why it worked
Most marketers avoid this category, because one wrong move gets the whole listing suspended. We knew where the lines are, did the highest-return thing first (reviews), and were honest about what we could and couldn't control. We never promised a ranking. We promised the work would get done right, and the numbers followed.
And the owner isn't locked in. Everything we built sits in his name.
